Major Swords
Magical Sword
The Magical Sword is the final and strongest of all three swords in The Legend of Zelda. In the first quest, the sword is in the posession of an old man who lives under one of the graves of Hyrule's cemetery, but will only part with it once Link's health bar has 12 Heart Containers.
Master Sword
"But then, when all hope had died, and the hour of doom seemed at hand... a young boy clothed in green appeared as if from nowhere. Wielding the Blade of Evil's Bane, he sealed the dark one away and gave the land light."
The Master Sword (¥Þ¥¹¥¿©`¥½©`¥É, Masutaa S¨do) (also known as The Blade of Evil's Bane[1][2][3] or as the Sword of Time[4]) is typically the most powerful weapon in a Zelda game for general usage; with the exception of the Biggoron Sword, Gilded Sword, Great Fairy's Sword, and the upgrades in A Link to the Past. The Master Sword will usually have a power level of two or three times that of the starting sword. Zelda states that the sword was created by Ancient Sages[3]. However, how, when, and exactly which sages created it remains unclear.
Biggoron's Sword
The Biggoron's Sword is an enormous blade crafted by the immense Biggoron. It appears in several games as an alternative to the one-handed Master Sword. It is obtained from Biggoron in several games as the ultimate goal of a trading sequence.
In Ocarina of Time, the sword is a much more sturdy version of the Giant's Knife, which Biggoron crafted for a certain carpenter. It is the final item in the Adult Link trading sequence of the game. This blade is much longer than the Master Sword, and it must always be wielded with two hands, meaning that Link cannot defend with a shield while wielding it. However, the damage dealt by the Biggoron Sword is much greater then that of the Master Sword.
In Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, the Biggoron's Sword can only be acquired in a linked game by use of a password. In Oracle of Ages, the sword is obtained from the Goron Elder who resides at the Goron Shooting Gallery. In Oracle of Seasons, it is obtained from Biggoron himself. While every other item in these games is assigned to one hand and can be used in conjunction with another, the Biggoron's Sword takes up both slots as it is held with both hands. Link swings it in a whole 180-degree arc, as opposed to the other swords' 90-degree slash.
Four Sword
The Four Sword is a magical sword that has appeared in three games so far (Four Swords, Four Swords Adventures, and The Minish Cap) making it one of the most well-known weapons in recent Zelda history. The gem in its hilt changes color according to the copy of the wielder; in both Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures, the sword is seen with a green, red, blue, and purple gem in the hilt. However, in The Minish Cap, the sword only has a green gem in the hilt, as there literally is only one copy of Link. The Four Sword has a long history behind it, told in The Minish Cap. It was originally the legendary Picori Blade, which was broken by Vaati and reforged by Melari into the White Sword. Link, who needed the sword to defeat Vaati, collected the Four Elements and transformed the White Sword into the Empowered White Sword. Once he collected the final Element, the sword became the Four Sword.
The Four Sword has the ability to split its wielder into four copies, making it possible to move larger stones out of the way, or hit several switches simultaneously. The Four Sword can also be used to "seal" evil powers away in itself, which is what Link did to Vaati, and later Ganon. After Vaati was first sealed in the sword, the wielder no longer had control of the sword's splitting powers, suggesting that Vaati "corrupted" the blade somehow.
Phantom Sword
The Phantom Sword is the only thing that can harm Bellum and Phantoms in Phantom Hourglass. It is composed of three types of Pure Metals
Although the sword is shaped completely differently from the Master Sword, it shares much of the coloring.
In essence, getting the Pure Metals in order to get the Phantom Sword is a new version of the old quest introduced in A Link to the Past and that has been used in The Legend of Zelda series on several occasions thereafter. This quest requires Link to find three similar objects in the colors red, green and blue in order to get access to a sacred sword. However, the purpose of the items needed is claimed to be different - in A Link to the Past, they are meant to prove the attributes of the wielder, while in Phantom Hourglass, obtaining them only proves empathy and service to the respective tribes. Finally, the familiar Master Sword music plays when Link acquires the Phantom Sword.
Minor Swords
White Sword
In The Legend of Zelda, the White Sword is the second sword which Link receives, following the Wooden Sword and before the Magical Sword. It can be obtained once Link has five hearts in his heart meter. It is obtained by speaking to the Old Man in a cave in the North-East of Hyrule, guarded by a Lynel. The Old Man will ask "Have you looked behind the waterfall?", which is a clue to the hiding place of the White Sword.
Fighter's Sword
Link's Uncle will give this sword to Link early in the game (together with the Fighter's Shield) as he enters Hyrule Castle, and teaches Link the Spin Attack. He will use this blade during the game until he can find the Master Sword. (basicly a normal sword)
Tempered Sword
The Tempered Sword is the third sword level. It is acquired when the missing Dwarven Smith is reunited with his partner. At this point, the pair will temper the Master Sword for Link for the tiny sum of 10 rupees in thanks. The tempering is an upgrade that makes the sword much stronger, gives it a reddish-orange glow, and causes it to make a deeper swing sound as opposed to the usual slash sound. It has double the strength of the original Master Sword, but the Sword Beam still has the same power of the first one.
Golden Sword
When Link throws the Master Sword or Tempered Sword into the Fat Fairy's fountain within the Pyramid of Power, she transforms it into the Golden Sword, which has a golden blade and green hilt, and is four times stronger than the Master Sword. In addition, it has the ability to break jars (or skulls in the Dark World).
Wooden Sword
In The Legend of Zelda, the Wooden Sword is found at the starting point in the cave, given to him by an Old Man. Link uses this sword until he obtains the White Sword, which is more powerful. It is known merely as "Sword" (¥½©`¥É) in the Japanese game.
Kokiri Sword
The Kokiri Sword is the default sword Link possesses in both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. It is also the weakest sword in both games. In Ocarina of Time it is the only sword he can wield as a child, and when he is an adult, he uses the Master Sword instead. In Majora's Mask Link is able to upgrade the Kokiri Sword to the powerful (although breakable) Razor Sword and then upgrade again into the unbreakable Gilded Sword by taking it to the blacksmiths in Mountain Village. The hilt and guard of the Kokiri sword changed from Ocarina of Time to Majora's Mask.
Picori Sword
The Picori Blade was an enchanted sword given to the Hero of Men when the Picori appeared. The sword was used to defeat evil and was ultimately enshrined as a sacred sword. The sword is broken by Vaati in The Minish Cap. Later on, the sword is reforged by Melari and then becomes known as the White Sword. Once the White Sword is infused with all of the four Elements, it becomes the Four Sword and is then used to defeat and seal Vaati away.
Oshus's Sword
Oshus's Sword is the first sword obtained in Phantom Hourglass. It is found inside a chest in Oshus' storehouse, which can be opened using the correct password. Ciela tells Link that the password she has seen Oshus use is the number of palm trees found on the beach of Mercay Island. The sword is nearly identical to the Hero's Sword from The Wind Waker, except with a blue pommel and a slightly longer blade.
Oshus's Sword is somewhat weak, like all first swords acquired in Zelda games but, like always, it has power enough to get you through most of the game. You can power this sword more by collecting Power Gems and then sailing to Spirit Island to put them to use on your power fairy. The same can be done to your Phantom Sword once it is acquired.
Other Swords
Ganon's Swords
Although they go unnamed throughout The Legend of Zelda series, Ganondorf has several swords that he uses often. They are inscribed with various pictures or writing (depending on the game). The most notable appearances of the sword are in The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Non-canon appearances of a sword-wielding Ganondorf include several of Ganondorf's victory poses in Super Smash Bros. Melee and the Spaceworld 2000 demo which included a sword fight between Link and Ganon. This sword was much bulkier than the swords he uses in the main series, and had a rounded tip.
Darknut Sword
The Darknut Sword is a weapon used by Darknuts in The Wind Waker. It takes the form of a large, jagged-bladed broadsword; the Darknuts use the weapon one-handed; however, due to its size, Link must use both hands to wield it.
As with all enemy weapons in The Wind Waker, Link is able to pick up a dropped weapon and use it to attack, but cannot take it with him into a different area.
Sword of the Sages
The Sword of the Sages was a magical sword of light used by the Sage of Water in Twilight Princess. The sword was thrust into Ganondorf's chest in hopes of executing him. The attempt was in vain thanks to the Triforce of Power in Ganondorf's hand. Taking no harm but a glowing wound in his chest, Ganondorf took the sword and killed the Sage. Ganondorf kept the sword and used it later in the game in the final battle with Link. The sword's shape seems to boast a type of long sword, though its size suggests that it is more of a katana-like blade instead. You can also note that when looking at the blade while Ganondorf is wielding it, the color changed from white to a glowing red.
It is suspected that in Twilight Princess, Ganondorf continues to carry the Sword of the Sages because he wants the Sages, who attempted to execute him, to see what has been done with their own blade. He says of Link's Master Sword, then his own:
An impressive-looking blade... But nothing more. Would you hear my desire?
To take this foul blade...and use it to blot out the light forever!
Twilight Sword
The Twilight Sword is a mysterious blade used by Zant to resurrect Stallord in Twilight Princess. When Zant confronted Link in Arbiter's Grounds, he placed the sword in the head of the fallen beast, awakening the once dead creature, and beginning the fourth boss battle. It is unclear if the Twilight Sword has any other powers, as it is not used or seen for the remainder of the game. It is possible that it gave Stallord many of the powers he has such as calling upon Staltroops and flying after losing his body. The sword is also Stallord's Critical Point in the second half of the battle, after destroying his spine.
